Have you heard of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs?
As I was sitting in my Intro to Business class this morning listening to Professor Kelly talk about motivation. He had us turn to page 263 of our text book.(Understanding Business eighth edition)It blew my mind! I do believe it's the most excited I've been in that class yet. Professor Kelly drew a triangle on the board that was seperated into five levels. They list as follows.
1. Self Actualization
2. Esteem
3. Social
4. Safety
5. Physiological
He went on to explain that starting at the bottom of the chart, the physiological need is that you need shoes. Then we move up to safety, which is where you pick the shoe that best fits your need. If you are more social you may buy a brand name shoe that everyone is wearing so you can feel like you fit in with your peers. If you are motivated by esteem then you would want to pick the shoe that is going to be the next big thing! So you can be seen as the leader. Then there are the few that fit into the Self Actualization, these people don't care. They are comfortable with themselves, and don't base their selfworth on what other people thing of them. So I have one queston for you.
What Motivates You?
